Reef Report: June 20th - Islamorada with Key Dives

Dive 1: Rocky Top reef, depth 20', seas <1, vis. 40', no current, water temp. 86 degrees. Sightings include trumpet fish, blue runners, hog fish, grouper, jacks, blue tang, schooling snapper and grunts, stingrays, scrawled file fish.

Dive 2, Alligator reef, depth 20', seas <1', vis. 60', no current, water temp. 86 degrees. Sightings include nurse sharks, very large barracudas, grouper, juvenile Spanish hog cleaning stations, golden eel, moray eel, black margates, Bermuda chub, yellow tail, Sergeant Majors, channel clinging crabs, numerous lobsters.

Dive the Vandenburg in Key West with ADA!

A special trip is planned for the weekend of August 22-23 this year in the lower Keys. Here are the details for the upcoming ADA Weekend Getaway:

Aug. 22 Looe Key SOLD OUT! reef dive on famous Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. Shallow reef with towering coral heads, tropicals. Two tank boat dive.  $70 includes tanks and weights.

Aug. 23  Vandenberg wreck, a 522' former military missile tracking ship, sits upright at 140', rising up within 50' of the surface.  Wreck dive and nearby reef, $70. This is an advanced dive, ADA criteria apply.

Weekend planning option 1:
Sat. AM drive to Looe Key Reef Resort, about 3 hrs, from Miami, check in time noon, two dives, overnight at the resort or other nearby hotels.  (hotels not included)

Sun. 7:30 AM report to the Lost Reef Adventures shop Key West. Two dives, then spend the rest of the day in Key West and watch the sunset and the crazies at Mallory Square before heading home. 

Weekend planning option 2:
Looe Key only, return home Sat. night, or wreck dive only, return Sun. night.

Saturday, July 11th: The waters surrounding this wreck sits are so clear because it is closer to the Gulfstream than most wrecks and reefs. Some very large fish such as barracuda, amberjack, and cobia are often spotted swimming around the wreck. Advanced criterion applies. Meet at Florida Keys Dive Center at noon.

Tavernier - Night Dive!
Share the excitement of night diving!

Saturday, July 11th: When night falls, turn on your flashlight and jump right in! Say hello to a whole new world of curious crabs, hovering squid, walking lobsters, beady-eyed shrimp, free swimming morays, sleeping parrotfish and friendly turtles. Never been on a night dive before? Let us show you how! Meet at Florida Keys Dive Center at 6:00 p.m.

Clear water, Calm seas, abundant marine life!

Saturday, July 18th: Experience the clear water and abundant marine life of Islamorada, just 4 miles past Tavernier. Here we'll find many colorful tropical fish and other wonderful sea creatures. Look for the big sign that says Bud & Mary's Marina. Meet at Key Dives at noon.
