Key
Largo with Horizon Divers
Saturday, May 11
It was a beautiful Saturday morning,
and eight Active Divers enjoyed the
excellent conditions and amazing
marine life, Key Largo had to offer!
Dive
1: Benwood Wreck. Seas
1-3', viz 60 feet, depth 25-45, water
temp 82. In 1942, the Norwegian
freighter known as the Benwood met its
fate in a collision, sinking to the
ocean floor. Fast forward to today, it
serves as a vibrant underwater habitat
teeming with marine creatures. Schools
of fish gracefully navigate the wreck,
enveloping divers in their midst.
Among the diverse marine life
encountered by divers were pork fish,
grunts, yellowtails, angel fish, a
variety of parrot fish including a
striking midnight parrotfish, as well
as a sizable crab, lizard fish, and
some macro creatures like shrimp, and
arrow crabs.
Dive
2: French Reef- Sand
Bottom Cove. Seas 1-3', viz 60 feet,
depth 20-35, water temp
82. Following a brief surface
interval, the group geared up for
their second dive at French Reef. The
name of the spot, 'Sand Bottom Cove,'
aptly depicted the first of several
coves and expansive ledges they
explored. Some of the coves were
spacious enough to swim through, and
upon emerging from one, the group
encountered a small hawksbill turtle
nestled under a ledge. Alongside the
turtle, divers encountered the
familiar inhabitants of the reef,
including lobsters, trunk fish, parrot
fish, and trumpet fish.
