Key Largo with Horizon Divers -
Day and Night
Saturday, June 11
Dive
1: North North Dry Rocks -
Seas less than a foot, depth 25,
viz 60, no current, water temp 82.
We love the northern reefs with
abundant soft corals and
interesting marine life. This dive
was spur and groove with high
walls. Sightings include huge
channel clinging crab, abundant
sea fans, elkhorn coral, green
moray eels, very large porcupine
pufferfish. It's wonderful to be
diving in the turquoise calm clear
water of Key Largo again!
Dive
2: The Elbow - Fingers -
Seas less than a foot, depth 27,
viz 60, mild current, water temp
82. More of the great high relief
fingers, though these were lined
with huge stands of healthy
elkhorn corals on top. Capt. Troy
said this is one of the last
healthy stands of abundant elkhorn
in all of Key Largo. We saw a huge
school of blue tangs moving
swiftly and aggressively attacking
the reef along the way,
lizardfish, scorpionfish and a big
barracuda with big teeth. Steve
and Natalie saw five spotted eagle
rays, Rudy and Eric saw a small
green turtle scratching its back
on a fan, and Rachel and John saw
an enormous loggerhead swimming
swiftly away and a huge green
moray swimming toward us!
Night
Dive: Hannah M. Belle wreck
(f/k/a Mike's Wreck) -
Seas less than a foot, depth 25,
viz a flashlight beam, no current,
water temp 82. It was a great
night for a dive with clear, calm,
warm water and this actually began
at dusk. Sightings on the wreck
included a spotted moray on the
hunt, two pairs of lobsters
fighting for territory, others
boldly strolling about, another
large channel clinging crab and
its smaller purple brother. But
the highlight of this dive was the
octopus spotted by Rachel, John
and Eric that started out
glowstick green, then changed to
white, purple and brown with
spots, right before our eyes. A
great dive followed by warm
breezes and a starlit sky on the
ride back to the dock.
