Reef Report
Sunday, June 27
Key Largo, Island Ventures
Winds were at approximately 12 kts to 14 kts, seas were 3’ to 4’, visibility
40’, air temp - 89 degrees, water temp - 83 degrees, 10 Active Divers with Island Ventures. Boat crew consisted of
the 1 Vessels, 1 Captains and 1 Crew Members.
1st Dive: Aquarium Reef (ball 3): The seas 3’ to 4’ waves in height and the day
was cloudy with an occasional summer shower. The water temperature being a warm 83’ degrees. Upon descending
the reef surrounded the boat, the visibility was approximately 40 feet. No current was detected at the surface
or at depth. The 10 divers followed the crew’s instructions on how to dive the reef. Sightings observed by the
divers included Snappers, Groupers, Turtles, Nurse Sharks, Reef Sharks, Large Parrot Fish and an abundance beautiful
reef fish.
2nd Dive – Aquarium Reef (ball 7): For dive #2, the travel to a second area was a
very short distance allowing the divers just enough time to change cylinders. The surface swells and winds equaled
the first dive. For the first half of the dive no current was detected on the surface or at depth but that
changed mid dive. The current picked sufficiently to elevate the diver’s respiration and double the air consumption.
On this dive many reef fish were observed as in the first dive, along with large Muttons, and Gray Snappers.
Divers also enjoyably experiencing a ships winch situated in the sand areas near pieces of a small wreck. A
treat during this dive was the appearance of a 6’ to 7’ Reef Shark that didn’t mind hanging out for a bit, and
circling the divers to get a better look. The second dive’s visibility and water temperature were the same as
the first.
Although the trip to the reefs gave concerns, they quickly diminished under the surface. The dives were
comfortable and pleasant completely opposite of the surface experience.
