North Key Largo with Horizon Divers

Dive 1 – Elbow Reef - Anchor Chain:  Seas 2', Depth 30, Water temp 86, mild current, visibility 40'. This site had high boulder coral relief with some good soft coral. Marine life included schools of grunts and yellowtails and plenty of parrotfish, trunkfish and porkfish.

Dive 2 – City of Washington Wreck: Seas 2', Depth 31, Water temp 86, mild current, visibility 40'. This wreck had towering spires and many nooks and crannies with schools of yellowtails and grunts in abundance. A highlight of this dive was a small green sea turtle.

Dive 3 – Hannah M. Bell Wreck (night dive): Seas 2', Depth 26, Water temp 86, no current, visibility 40'. Formerly known as Mike's Wreck until historians discovered the true identity of this steam ship that sank in 1911. Our dive began at dusk, then transitioned to night. There were lobsters walking around everywhere - spiny, Spanish and slipper. The highlight of this dive was a very curious squid who came right up to my flashlight and hung out there for about ten minutes, putting on quite a display with its tentacles and fins. I finally realized that my light was attracting a lot of small worms and minnows and the squid was actually feeding. I all my years of diving I had never seen a squid behave this way. This proves that after hundreds of dives you can still always experience something new!

TRAFFIC ALERT

22 miles of Turnpike construction is underway in south Miami-Dade County. Expect slow downs, delays, hazardous driving conditions, and plan accordingly when traveling to our dives in the Florida Keys. This project is anticipated to last for several months. Friendly reminder - for the safety of all concerned, our rules require all divers to be present for the entire pre-dive briefing. Failure to do so could result in being excluded from the Active Divers group for that dive. Please plan ahead and allow plenty of travel time so you're not the diver showing up late.
