Reef Report
Saturday, July 17
Key Largo with Horizon Divers
It
was a great day to dive, and 22 Active Divers enjoyed a total of three different dives: a shallow reef and deep
wreck afternoon dive, followed by a night dive.
Shallow
Reef Dive
Dive
1 - Benwood Wreck. Depth 46 ft. at the bow, viz 50 ft, water temp 83 degrees. Always a
really fun wreck we were greeted with clouds of snappers and grunts in many places, lobster, large green moray eel,
and huge free swimming nurse shark.
Dive 2 - North North Dry Rocks. Depth 21 ft, viz 50 ft, water temp 84 degrees. The
coral was exceptional here with fields of mature CRF planted staghorn on the bottom, with naturally-occurring elkhorn
at the top. We love the northern reefs which were not as affected by Hurricane Irma in 2017. We also appreciate
Horizon Divers for not rushing us, being very pleasant and allowing us a full 60 minutes bottom time.
-- Active Divers Vice President and Safety Officer Rachel Davis
Deep
Wreck Dive
Dive
1 & 2 - Spiegel Grove Wreck double dip. The weather cooperated staying sunny with occasional
clouds, and the seas were 2 to 4 feet. After a 45 minute boat ride from the Horizon Divers dock, we moored on Mooring
Ball number 5, midship on the Spiegel Grove crane. Depth ranged from 60 feet to the top of the crane to 120+ feet at
the sea floor. Diving a nitrox mixture of 30 percent, we were able to make two 30-minute dives, including safety
stops. On dive one, we went from midship to stern, and on dive two we went from midship to bow. We spent an hour
off-gassing between dives.
Among the sights were numerous tropicals, including queen and gray angelfish, blue parrotfish, sergeant majors, and
various tangs. We also spotted three Caribbean reef sharks, several barracuda, and one rather curious hawksbill
turtle. At the end of the second dive, the boat raced to the dock so we could prepare for the subsequent night dive.

Night
Dive
Dive
1 - Hannah M. Bell Wreck (f/k/a Mike's Wreck). Depth 26 ft. viz night dive clear, water
temp 83 degrees. This is a great wreck day or night, and at night very interesting. It was lobsterpalooza time with
bugs everywhere brazenly walking about. Other sightings included sleeping parrotfish, and the occasional eel.
Congratulations to first-time night divers Angelica Cookson and John Wall.
