Reports
Looe Key with Looe Key Reef
Resort
Saturday, July 16
Our annual trek to Looe Key and Key
West was spectacular and lots of fun
as always.
Dive 1: West End Ball 20 -
seas 1-2 feet, depth 29, water temp 87
degrees, viz 20 maybe, no current. The
marine life around Looe Key's towering
fingers was spectacular as always with
huge colorful parrotfish and an
enormous Goliath Grouper.
Dive 2: East End Ball 1 -
seas 1-2 feet, depth 26, water temp 87
degrees, viz dirty 30, strong current.
There was spectacular stands of
elkhorn coral on top of the fingers
with schooling sergeant majors and
chubbs galore. A large 8-foot
Caribbean reef shark buzzed through.
We crawled around the bottom not too
far from the boat to try and duck away
from the current. But there was a lot
to see there.

Report
Vandenburg in Key West with Lost
Reef Adventures
Sunday, July 17
We love the Vandenburg and it is
always the crown jewel of the Looe
Key/Key West weekend.
Dive 1: Depth 101,
viz 20', water temp 87, moderate
current. On the first dive we
took the long rope into the green pea
soup with poor viz. Once on the wreck
it was better and made for an
interesting tour. Schooling barracudas
hung around and a school of silvery
lookdowns.
Dive 2: Depth 89, viz 40', water temp
87, slight current. Fortunately for
us, during the one-hour surface
interval the blue water came in and
improved the viz significantly. A nice
tour of the wheelhouse, and across the
massive wreck and up the smoke stack
at the end. It was a wonderful dive
all around!
