Black Water Drift Dive, WPB

Dive 1 - Atlantic Ocean off the coast of WPB, Max Depth (SO group only) 77ft, seas less than a foot, viz clear (the length of a flash light beam).
The first Active Divers Black Water Drift dive was incredible, to say the very least. The evening began with a leisurely sunset cruise out to our max 'depth' - 763 ft. Over some ice cold, complimentary beverages, the crew gave us the run down on what to expect - since this was a first for us all. Once we arrived at the desired spot, a cleverly crafted, floating light system was lowered into the water and we were all dropped very near to this 'disco ball' of lights. These lights were set out to attract plankton up from the depths, and in turn, the dazzling creatures that feed on them. Truly, we were astronauts in an alien world! We found ourselves quickly surrounded and hypnotized by so many little creatures, I couldn't possibly name them all - tiny crab larvae, larval shrimp, comb jellies, fish larvae - members of our group even spotted a loggerhead turtle and a group of Atlantic Squid! This is a dive that everyone should experience at least once, it was exhilarating and beautiful.

South Islamorada, Key Dives

DIVE 1 - Rocky Top Seas 2 ft or less, depth 20', Vis 60+ and warm seas.  Nine ADAers, including new member, John Kojak (fresh from California) experienced lots of fish; schools of grunts, snappers and parrotfish on a reef that typifies its name.Key Dives provided, as a bonus, guided tours which added to the relaxation of an already serene dive.

DIVE 2 - Morada Reef  More guided tours, seas 2 feet, Depth 15 to 20, vis 50. The reef sported a flat profile but boasted schools of baby Hammerhead (Bonnet-head) Sharks and an unusual sight these days,
groupings of antler coral in pristine condition! Also spotted a Nurse Shark and pufferfish.. Crew was especially attentive!  Great Dive.

Active Divers Association’s 2021 Coral Restoration Program

Space is limited to sign up for this year’s Coral Restoration program, to be held on Sept. 11.  Act now to save your spot. This is your opportunity to participate in our ongoing efforts to restore the reefs of the Florida Keys to their former color and beauty many of us remember from years past.  After fifteen years of partnering with the Coral Restoration Foundation, for this year’s program we are working with Islamorada Conservation and Restoration Foundation (“I.CARE”), a team of scientists and interns dedicated to the restoration of Islamorada’s reefs.

Our divers will start the day by meeting at Key Dives, and at 8:30 a.m. we will visit the nearby onshore coral nursery to see the specimens being nurtured there, including brain corals, a variety of bouldering star corals, elkhorn and staghorn varieties.  At the nursery we will experience a tutorial on corals and the threats to our reefs and receive training in a hands-on workshop on how to transplant baby corals.

Lunch will be provided as part of the program from the delicious selections offered by Mango Mike’s Café at Bud N’ Mary’s Marina.  Then we will meet back at the dive shop for our two-tank dive transplanting baby corals and maintaining previous out-planting sites.  Whether you have been part of Active Divers’ past coral programs or this is your first time, Sept. 11 will be one of your most rewarding days spent underwater.  Sign up now!
