Take a journey with this video down to the Vandenberg Wreck in Key West, one of our favorite wrecks enjoyed during our annual Looe Key/Key West weekend.

Vandenberg with Lost Reef Adventures

Double Dip: We love our annual dive club sojourn to the lower Keys and this year did not disappoint! Although the Looe Key reef dive was blown out by Isaias, our crew of nine Active Divers were suitably entertained by the good food and live music in the Looe Tiki Bar, lounging by the pool, late night card games and a visit to the Turtle Hospital. But the icing on this weekend's cake was our double dip on the Vandenberg wreck, which was the best Vandy we've had in years with warm water, zero current and awesome viz!!!

Seas 1-2’, depth 100’, Vis 70’, water temp 84 degrees, no current. The fallen satellite dishes are now home to teeming swarms of juvenile tropical fish. Other sightings include many large solitary barracuda, southern stingray, green moray eel, Goliath grouper, schooling bar and horseeye jacks, scrawled filefish, yellowtail snapper, Pompano, and a very thin Bony Tony hanging around the mid-ship area. Moored to the bow ball, the perfect conditions allowed us to go all the way around the wreck and see the entire 522 foot long ship in a single dive!

-- Active Divers Safety Officer Rachel Davis

When the Looe Key dive scheduled for Saturday afternoon cancelled, our crew of nine Active Divers toured The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, learning about how they rescue, rehab and release sea turtles needing their care. From left: Roger Bach, Kyle Weisenberg, Amber Vazquez, David Silverman, Mark Silverman, John Davis, Rachel Davis, Natalie Thomas, Jean Gruss.

This lovely lady doesn't look too happy! Must be that conga playing!!!

What is the Goliath Grouper Aggregation dive?
Each year between August and September, Goliath Groupers migrate in by the hundreds to spawn around the wrecks and reefs surrounding Palm Beach County. These giant fish gather in groups of up to 100 on the wrecks we'll dive on September 5th. Goliath groupers are the largest predatory, reef-dwelling fish species in the Caribbean, weighing up to 660 pounds and measuring up to 8 feet long. Check out our video and don't miss this exciting once-in-a-lifetime dives!

Avoid Disappointment - Plan Ahead!
Covid 19 has had an unprecedented effect on diving in South Florida. Due to dive boats running at reduced capacity to allow for social distancing, spaces on dive boats are limited. With diving being one of the few relatively safe pursuits, coupled with vacations being cancelled and inability to travel, demand for diving has never been higher. Therefore we recommend booking our dives well in advance. The remaining dives this season still have space available:
  • October 18 - Boynton Beach (3 spaces left)
  • October 24 - Key Largo (6 spaces left)
  • November 1 - Key Largo (5 spaces left)
  • November 7 - Boynton Beach (3 spaces left)
  • November 15 - Key Largo (6 spaces left)
