Reef
Report
Sunday, August 9
Key Largo with Island Ventures
Winds were
insignificant at approximately 10
mph, Seas were 1’ to
2', Visibility 50’ to 60’,
Air Temp - 92 degrees, Water Temp -
84 degrees.
8 Active Divers on Island Ventures – Boat
Crew consisted of the Vessel Captain (Wolf
Man) and a 1 Crew Member (Karrie).
Dive 1: Aquarium Reef - The
seas were approximately 1-foot waves in
height and the day was sunny with the
water temperature being a warm 84’
degrees. Upon descending the reef was
located underneath and starboard side of
the boat, the visibility was approximately
50 to 60 feet. No current could be
detected at the surface or at depth of
25'. The 10 divers followed the crew’s
instructions on how to dive the reef. A
large abundance of snappers were
encountered along with many beautiful reef
fish, Nurse Shark, Queen Angels, Lobsters,
multiple of Blue Parrot Fish were sighted.
A Moray Eel was observed lodged within the
ledge. The dive site maintains an amazing
colorful reef.
Dive 2: The
anchor ball was not marked; the Captains
best guess was either Hole in the Wall
Reef or Eagle Ray Alley. For dive #2
the travel to a second area within
Molasses Reef was very short allowing the
divers just enough time to change
cylinders. Multiple reef fish as in the
first dive were encountered as well as
numerous extremely large Mutton, and Gray
Snappers. Divers also encountered a
Spotted Eagle Ray swimming along the reef
and later underneath the boat giving the
divers a close-up view of its gracious
swimming skills. The second dive’s
visibility and water temperature were the
same as the first. The dive was as
enjoyable as the first with the added
surprise. The reef was also home to a
large Moray Eel.
This weekend was difficult to find spots
on the reefs due to lobster season. The
number amount of personal watercraft was
substantial. The boat captain and crew put
great effort in finding areas less crowded
and pristine for diving. They accomplished
their goals; the dive sites were
picturesque.

Who's
got the big lobsters? Juliana Bach, that's
who pulled this one up from the depths
during mini-season. Regular Florida
lobster season opened on August 6. |

What is the
Goliath Grouper Aggregation dive?
Each year between August and September,
Goliath Groupers migrate in by the hundreds to
spawn around the wrecks and reefs surrounding
Palm Beach County. These giant fish gather in
groups of up to 100 on the wrecks we'll dive
on September 5th. Goliath
groupers are the largest
predatory, reef-dwelling fish species in the
Caribbean, weighing up to 660 pounds and
measuring up to 8 feet long. Check out our
video and don't miss this exciting
once-in-a-lifetime dives! |

Disappointment - Plan Ahead!
Covid
19 has had an unprecedented effect on
diving in South Florida. Due to dive boats
running at reduced capacity to allow for
social distancing, spaces on dive boats
are limited. With diving being one of the
few relatively safe pursuits, coupled with
vacations being cancelled and inability to
travel, demand for diving has never been
higher. Therefore we recommend booking our
dives well in advance. The remaining dives
this season still have space available:
- October
24 - Key Largo (4 spaces left)
- November
1 - Key Largo (4 spaces left)
- November
7 - Boynton Beach (2 spaces left)
- November
15 - Key Largo (4 spaces left)
