Reef Report

Key Largo with Rainbow Reef

Dive 1: Benwood Wreck - Seas 1 foot, viz 40 ft, depth 37, water temp 86 degrees. As usual, this shallow wreck was covered with an abundance of marine life including large biomasses of grunts and yellowtails at the bow end of the wreck. Other sightings include yellow stingray, trunkfish, large parrotfish scorpionfish, large barracuda.

Dive 2: French Reef Turtle Ledges - Seas 1 foot, viz 30 ft, depth 33, water temp 86 degrees. Several yellow stingrays were hanging around this site, along with schooling blue chromis and creole wrasses, lobsters, large midnight parrotfish and schooling grunts.

Dive 3: Night Dive on the Benwood Wreck - Seas 1 foot, viz 40 ft, depth 37, water temp 86 degrees. One of the best night dives we've had in awhile! We spotted at least 5 green turtles including one really huge one, octopus that was changing colors before our eyes, many lobsters walking around, free swimming spotted moray eel feeding on minnows. On the boat ride back to the dock we were treated to an unbelievable amount of stars in the dark, moonless sky including a bright view of the milky way streaking across the sky, dotted with shooting stars. A truly epic night dive!

Get on the Waitlist to Go Diving!
Due to reduced capacity on the dive boats our space is limited. For dives that are sold out, call Lon (305-251-4975) or Rachel (786-316-9852) to be placed on the wait list, or simply reply to this email. We frequently have divers cancel, and being on the wait list could earn you a spot on the dive, even up to the day before. Also if you need to cancel a dive for any reason, please let us know with as much notice as possible because we often have a wait list of people eager to dive. To avoid disappointment, we encourage you to book as far in advance as possible.

What is the Goliath Grouper Aggregation dive?
Each year between August and September, Goliath Groupers migrate in by the hundreds to spawn around the wrecks and reefs surrounding Palm Beach County. These giant fish gather in groups of up to 100 on the wrecks we'll dive on September 5th. Goliath groupers are the largest predatory, reef-dwelling fish species in the Caribbean, weighing up to 660 pounds and measuring up to 8 feet long. Check out our video and don't miss this exciting once-in-a-lifetime dives!

Avoid Disappointment - Plan Ahead!
Covid 19 has had an unprecedented effect on diving in South Florida. Due to dive boats running at reduced capacity to allow for social distancing, spaces on dive boats are limited. With diving being one of the few relatively safe pursuits, coupled with vacations being cancelled and inability to travel, demand for diving has never been higher. Therefore we recommend booking our dives well in advance. The remaining dives this season still have space available:
  • November 1 - Key Largo (4 spaces left)
  • November 7 - Boynton Beach (1 space left)
  • November 15 - Key Largo (4 spaces left)
