Blackwater Drift Dive with Walkers Dive Charters
Saturday, August 13

Dark clouds gathering on the horizon didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of nine Active Divers as they boarded The Wetter the Better, the dive boat helmed by Bill Walker of Walker’s Dive Charters in Riviera Beach. As darkness descended with only flickers of light from Palm Beach in the distance, Capt. Walker motored out several miles offshore in 600 feet of water where the crew deployed a buoy with lights hanging down to 50 feet below the surface. Led by the intrepid dive guide JP, divers giant-strode into the very black waters of the Atlantic Ocean to observe the spectacular upwelling of millions of tiny creatures from the dark depths they inhabit during the day. Divers drifted seven miles north at depths of 30 to 50 feet following the buoy of lights and observed countless tiny eels, jellyfish and other mysterious unidentified larval life. Bioluminescent creatures flickered like Christmas tree lights, providing divers with a kaleidoscopic show for the one-tank dive that lasted nearly two hours.

We had flat calm conditions for a beautiful dive on August 14 at Boynton Beach. Left: A French Angelfish cruises along the reefs of Boynton Beach. Right: Known for its large vase sponges where a lone graysby takes refuge. Photos by Jean Gruss.

Cozumel was wonderful and a good time was had by all August 12-16. Reef Report
Islamorada with Key Dives
Saturday, August 20

Ten lucky ADA divers steamed out of Bud N’ Mary’s Marina with Key Dives on a steamy August Saturday afternoon bound for the reefs of Islamorada. Easterly winds of 15 knots made for a bumpy ride in two-to-three-foot seas but all gear was well secured and in short order divers were in the water at Maze, the first dive site selected for its sheltered location on the reef. A few lucky divers saw mahi-mahi swimming under the boat after navigating coral heads teeming with life. After a short interval munching on orange slices provided by Key Dives mate Amanda, divers jumped in at Alligator Reef Lighthouse where they were treated to sharks, turtles, stingrays and large schools of colorful reef fish. Visibility was a good 40 feet and the current was light, the water temperature 86 degrees. The moon jellyfish reappeared as they do at this time every year, hovering around the surface waiting for unsuspecting divers. Most divers wore wetsuits and carefully avoided the gentle stings as they surfaced. Longtime ADA member Roger Bach rued forgetting his shorty wetsuit as a moon jelly snuck up his shorts and stung him in his nether regions, much to his buddy’s amusement.
