Reef Report
Key West Weekend
August 23-25
Friday, August 23
Unfortunately, a tropical wave
was crossing the state over the
weekend bringing lots of
thunderstorms. Our Islamorada
dive on Friday was aborted when
the boat loaded up with divers
was headed out into a ring of
black thunderstorms. The boat
made a U-turn back to the dock
to wait out the storm, but
it never let up.
Saturday, August 24
Dive 1 - Haystacks:
The viz was really bad on this
reef and the water was a very
warm 90 degrees. This reef was a
spur and groove system, much
like the reefs of Looe Key. The
fingers towered very high up to
about 8' depth, while the bottom
was a 24' max depth. Some in our
group spotted nurse sharks and a
green moray eel. Others saw
conch, angelfish, trunkfish and
numerous blue tangs
feeding on
the reef.
Dive 2 - Cannonball
Cut: Viz was
about the same here at maybe 10
feet. Interesting sightings
included scorpionfish, large
midnight and rainbow parrotfish,
cowfish, hogfish, snappers and
many Christmas tree worms on the
large corals.
