Reef Report
Key West Weekend
August 23-25

Friday, August 23

Unfortunately, a tropical wave was crossing the state over the weekend bringing lots of thunderstorms. Our Islamorada dive on Friday was aborted when the boat loaded up with divers was headed out into a ring of black thunderstorms. The boat made a U-turn back to the dock to wait out the storm, but it never let up.

Saturday, August 24

Dive 1 - Haystacks: The viz was really bad on this reef and the water was a very warm 90 degrees. This reef was a spur and groove system, much like the reefs of Looe Key. The fingers towered very high up to about 8' depth, while the bottom was a 24' max depth. Some in our group spotted nurse sharks and a green moray eel. Others saw conch, angelfish, trunkfish and numerous blue tangs feeding on the reef.

Dive 2 - Cannonball Cut: Viz was about the same here at maybe 10 feet. Interesting sightings included scorpionfish, large midnight and rainbow parrotfish, cowfish, hogfish, snappers and many Christmas tree worms on the large corals.

Sunday, August 25 - Double Dip on the Vandenburg Wreck

The weather cooperated with relatively calm seas and mild current on the wreck. We were moored to Ball 2 which is one of the best, near the superstructure at 60 feet and the wheelhouse. The viz wasn't perfect here, but much better than the reef with about 30–40-foot visibility. From here we made it out to the American flag hanging on the arch and all the way to the bow, coming back to explore the wheelhouse. We saw numerous tropicals swirling around the wreck and great coral encrustation on all of the exposed metal. This is a fantastic wreck and one of our all-time favorites.

Our members raved about the Perry Hotel. Special thanks to Unicorns Travel agency owner and Active Diver Lisa Littleton for getting us such a great deal. We will definitely be back next year!

When Friday's dive got blown out by thunderstorms, a group of Active Divers visited the Turtle Hospital in Marathon, a Rescue, Rehab and Release facility caring for sea turtles.
The only marine life we saw in Islamorada was this manatee cruising through the bay.

Job Well Done!
Congratulations to Alexandra Hill and Josh Guerrero on earning their PADI Advanced Open Water and Nitrox Certifications.
