Okinawa Wreck Dusk/Night Dive in
Pompano with South Florida
Diving Headquarters
Saturday, September 3
Six Active Divers headed out for the
Okinawa wreck, a small tugboat off the
coast of Pompano Beach. Although the
wreck is small, there are lots of
interesting rooms to explore within
the wreck, with the propellor at 70
feet on the sand and the wheelhouse at
about 50 feet. One of the best parts
of this dive is coming up to a
glorious orange-sky sunset on the way
to the reef site for the night dive.
We were treated to Razzle Dazzle for
the second dive at depth of 40-60
feet. The six of us stayed together
under a single flag carried by
Divemaster-in-training Rudy Lopez. In
addition to having a glowstick on the
flag, the Captain asked us all to
shine our lights straight up to the
surface during our safety stop so he
would see the pool of light and know
we were about to come up. It worked
like a charm because the boat was
waiting right next to us when we
surfaced. Interesting sightings
included a large channel clinging
crab, and a decorator crab carrying
around a huge piece of purple sponge
on its back. The lobster hunters in
our group came back with a few for
dinner. The water was a balmy 86
degrees, and with a sky full of stars
and million-dollar homes lit up
beautifully along the intracoastal, a
great time was had by all.
