Spigel Grove Double Dip
Saturday, September 17
It was a nice day for a double dip on
the Spiegel Grove. Thirteen advanced
Active Divers boarded
Horizon Divers large pontoon boat with
Capt. Troy at the helm. We love
Horizon Divers because the
service is consistently excellent, and
the boat is very nice. The seas were
about 2-3 feet and the stable
pontoon boat made for a relatively
smooth ride. Fortunately, the current
was very minimal on the wreck
and the water is still a very warm 85
degrees. Because of the warm water,
Capt. Troy let us know that
they were having blue-green algae
blooms which reduced the visibility to
around 30 feet. We moored to
the #6 ball which is just over the
super structure. The lack of current
made it possible to go all the way
to the bow on the first dive, visiting
several swimthroughs around the
wheelhouse along the way. The
second dive took us back to the crane
and past the American and U.S. Marine
Corps flags. There are many
swimthroughs and passages to be
discovered in this area as well with
many openings toward the top.
We came into one room that appeared to
be cabins because there were two sinks
back-to-back in the
rooms. Marine life sightings include
barracudas, large pompanos, trumpet
fish, schooling gray snapper,
large blue parrotfish, humongous
rainbow parrotfish. A wonderful dive
day!
