Reef Report: September 23rd
Key Largo with Rainbow Reef Dive Center

Dive 1: Molasses, Fire Coral Cave. Seas <1', depth 30', vis 35', water temp 85 degrees, no current. Sightings include two nurse sharks, large Southern Stingray, green and spotted moray eels, schooling juvenile creole wrasses, schooling juvenile, butterfly fish, cudas, Hurricane damage seems to be sand washed to shallower water exposing coral rocks, some mound corals uprooted, sponges and sea fans missing. Fish populations appear about normal.

Dive 2 Molasses, Winch Hole. Seas <1', depth 30', vis 35', water temp 85 degrees, slight current. Sightings include golden eel, jack, spiral anemone with cleaner shrimp, schooling sergeant majors, cuda, schooling snappers, jack knife fish, queen and french angels, marine egg sac. Hurricane damage similar to dive 1 with wench moved north a few feet, train wheel moved, exposed more anchor chain and train wreckage. Overall, the damage is less than expected considering the wave height in that area during the storm (reported to have been 25'). Mother nature has rearranged the reef and it will be interesting to see how she rebuilds it. Stay tuned, we will update progress as we return and dive this same area in the future.
