Coral Restoration Experience with Coral Restoration Foundation and Key Dives

Dive 1: CRF coral nursery, seas < 1', depth 25', vis 50', water temp 85 degrees, moderate current.  After a guided tour of the baby corals, which were hanging from PVC trees ADA group began their assignment. We brushed the lines with a bathroom brush and scraped the trunks and limbs with a wood chisel.  The cascading debris attracted swarms of yellow tail fish, box fish, and even a stingray.  This maintenance is necessary to prevent the fire coral and algae from overgrowing the baby corals.

Dive 2: Pickles reef  seas < 1', depth 15', vis 60', water temp 85 degrees, slight current. Using the three point technique learned in the morning class, we cleared a small area and carefully glued the baby corals onto the barren areas of the reef base. The CRF has chosen this spot to cluster many corals, and previous classes had planted dozens which will someday mushroom into a dense forest of staghorn corals.  We also noted a small group of previously planted antler corals looking very robust.  A very rewarding and productive day by our ADA members, well done everyone!

Coral Reef Restoration – ADA Dive Program 1 Day Event – September 20, 2020

--By Steven Moore

Five Active Divers and six other divers met the morning of September 20 at the Keys Dive shop in Islamorada to learn about the corals and how CRF grows, and outplants them restoring the reefs. We started the morning with classroom education conducted by the CRF Recreational Dive Program Manager, Roxanne Boonstra. First topic was to discuss the CDC and CRF Covid-19 guidelines that will be followed during the day’s event which also met the ADA guidelines for the classroom and boat diving sessions.

Roxanne educated us on the importance of our oceans, the threats to the reefs today, coral genetics and diversity, the growing of the coral, cultivation, and monitoring processes, and why they concentrate on restoring staghorn and elkhorn coral in the Keys. She covered the cleaning process required to maintain the coral tree nurseries, so the coral has the best ability to grow healthy and quickly.

Then, she and several other CRF personnel conducted a hands-on exercise outside on how to select the best location on the reef to outplant coral, the separation distances to place the cutting, and how to epoxy them to the reef so they are secure enough to withstand the currents and surge.

Then we had great lunch before boarding the boat for a 2 tank dive first to the Tavernier Coral Tree Nursery (the largest in the world) to perform the needed cleaning maintenance, and then go the Pickles Reef for the coral Out-Planting. Thanks to Roy Wasson and his wife who provided the great lunch to the students as well as the CRF personnel.

We then boarded the boat and relaxed during the trip to the first dive spot on a “smooth” ocean. What a great day on the water!

Dive One: Tavernier Coral Tree Nursery: Buddy Teams did a short swim through a part of the nursery and then performed the cleaning of the trees that had elkhorn coral hanging from them. Although performing the cleaning is challenging and good buoyancy is key, it was a rewarding feeling knowing the coral will be healthier. Plus, we are actually feeding the resident fish and creatures who live in the nursery as we do the cleaning.

Dive Two: Pickles Reef: We descended on the reef, and immediately noticed other out-planted staghorn corals nearby which had already been planted. CRF Personnel located the identification tags on the reef and we started cleaning small areas with hammers where we then used three pieces of epoxy to secure each staghorn cutting in place. Each team completed the planting of eight cuttings on the reef. This hammering process disturbed a very small octopus who came out of a hole, close to one of the teams, and inked them.

It was an UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL THAT ATTENDED!!
