Goliath Grouper Dive with Kyalami in
Jupiter
Saturday, October 8
The forecast called for 3-5 with
occasional 6's. When we arrived the
wind was howling. The forecast ended
up being very accurate. The wind and
waves stirred up the visibility a bit,
but the goliath groupers were out in
force. 16 Active Divers set out on
this adventure. The first dive was the
wreck trek at 87 feet, 83 degree water
and a mild current. They gave us a
thorough briefing because when we got
down the DM was nowhere in sight. But
Amber remembered they said to head
north and we found the first wreck,
the Zion Train where we saw about 10
Goliath Groupers. Then we made our way
over to the Miss Jenny barge where
another five or so were. But the best
was the ESSO Bonaire where there were
about 10 or so, including inside the
wreck. It was very exciting to be
among these large and amazing fish.
The second dive took us to Capt.
Kirl's reef at 79 feet, moderate
current and 83 degree water. We saw a
spotted moray eel and numerous clouds
of fish, and a humongous lobster at
the end. Everyone made it back onto
the boat, some after a couple of
attempts. In spite of the very sporty
conditions, the great diving day was
capped off by a nice meal with friends
at the Square Grouper right at the
dock.
And for a handful of us that just
couldn't get enough, we made our way
down U.S. 1 a few short miles to the
night dive at the Blue Heron
Bridge.

Night Dive at the Blue Heron Bridge
Saturday, October 8
Six Active Divers dove the West Bridge
to 23 feet with 84 degree water. We
ran across many shrimp, lobsters and
crabs. There were large schools of
sheepshead and Atlantic spadefish, and
large crab devouring a sergeant major
right before our eyes. Other unusual
creatures included large bobbit worm
and thin spaghetti worms.
