November 2 Season
Closer Picnic at Blue Heron Bridge
This was by far one of the best season
closer picnics we've had since moving
to the Blue Heron Bridge location
several years ago. The benefits here
are covered picnic pavilions, plenty
of charcoal BBQ grills and best of all
- a short walk to the Scuba Magazine's
Best Shore Diving in South Florida!
With just a spot of rain early in the
morning the skies brightened for a
very sunny afternoon for our picnic.
About 35 people attended, with 22 of
those diving. We had four Safety
Officers in the water - Rachel, Steve,
Anand and Jonathan (SOC) leading
groups and looking after our five new
members - Ann Spagnolo, Antonio
Guerrero, Joe & Robin Renta, and
Tosha Grantham doing their first dive
with the club. We were treated to some
incredible sightings including a huge
spotted eagle ray, large southern
stingray, little yellow stingray,
spotted moray eel, sharptail eel, many
lobster, arrow crabs, coral crabs, too
many cushion sea stars to count and
huge schools of chubb and Atlantic
spadefish. The viz had improved from
prior days to about 15 feet, depth 18
and water temp still a warm-ish 81. A
fabulous time was had by all.
Special thanks to generous donations
from our dive shop sponsors Austin's
Dive Center, Force
E and Rainbow
Reef, and an individual donation
from Aileen Chew of Coral Gables of
very nice gently-used dive gear and
lots of accessories making it one of
the best raffles in our history. Every
attendee walked away with prizes. This
event could not have been possible
without our volunteers including our
BBQ chef Bruce, photographers Federico
and Deborah, prize patrol Juliana,
Charles and Amber, and pavilion
reservations by Maureen and Steve.
Thanks also to everyone who brought
food and participated. This club and
our good times would not be possible
without everyone's contributions and I
appreciate you all so much! Peace out
until next Spring when we'll bring you
a fabulous lineup of diving in 2025.
