Key Largo with Rainbow Reef

Winds 10 mph to 15 mph, seas 2’ to 4', visibility 40’, air temp - 82 degrees, water temp - 81 degrees. Ten ADA Divers, boat crew consisted of the vessel captain and two crew members.

Dive 1: Snapper Ledge - the seas were moderately rough but once you entered the water you immediately realized that the harsh weather was only on the surface. Upon descending the water no swells or current was detected and the enjoyment began. The ten divers followed the crew's instructions on how to dive the ledge. Obviously a large abundance of snappers were encountered along with many beautiful reef fish, multiple nurse sharks, and numerous moray eels lodged within the ledges.

Dive 2: Pickles Reef - same surface and subsurface as Snapper Ledge. The second dive’s visibility was slightly diminished but still very acceptable. The dive was as enjoyable as the first with an added surprise. A few of the divers spotted a juvenile hammerhead shark. The reef was also home to numerous reef fish, nurse sharks and eels, Upon surfacing the crew had cookies and sliced oranges for the trip back to the dock.

There were only ten divers, all from the ADA on that big Rainbow Reef 46’ boat. The ten divers were treated like royalty from the crew. Rainbow Reef  was a fantastic host; the employees from the shop and the vessel could not off been more amicable and pleasant, ensuring that we had an amazing experience.

Thank You Rainbow Reef, the ADA could not express enough off their gratitude for your extension off “Courtesy and Professionalism” to our members.

Lady Luck Wreck with South Florida Dive Headquarters

A lucky double dip on Lady Luck. What a difference and hour makes!

Dive 1: Lady Luck - seas around 2', very mild current, depth 112', water temp 81 degrees, viz 30 feet. What a magnificent wreck! For the first dive we explored around the stern where you find the majority of the structure including the wheelhouse and statues of the mermaid, sharks and card tables. Sightings on the wreck included a very large dark goliath grouper, large schools of barracuda, schools of porkfish, tangs and blue runners.

During the surface interval, the winds picked up substantially, the current got very strong and the seas went from 2' to 4' in the span of an hour.

Dive 2: Lady Luck - seas 4', current strong, depth 112' water temp 81 degrees, viz 30 feet. This was a tug to get back down. The current was running very strong from bow to stern so for this dive we headed toward the bow. There's not as much to see this direction, but we did make it to the bow. The deck is still around 110 feet, with our anchor line at 80 feet. The conditions made it challenging to navigate the wreck, and we had to keep a close eye on our bottom time. Everyone made it back on the boat safely and we look forward to adding this wreck to next year's schedule so more Active Divers can appreciate it.
